Why Your Hair Feels Different After Summer

Summer has a way of changing our routines without us really noticing.

We're spending more time with our families and friends, participating in activities like sports, swimming and having a cheeky drink in the beer garden - the bliss!

All this extra fun we're having means we're likely to be washing our hair more often, and next you know, your routine has taken its holidays too.

By the time summer is over, something starts to feel different.

Your colour may not look quite as fresh. Your hair might feel drier, heavier, frizzier, or simply harder to manage than it did a few months ago.

And suddenly, you find yourself wondering what went wrong.

Your Hair Has Been Living Summer Too

Hair does not exist separately from the life we live.

Changes in our environment, routine, weather and it's been an extremely hot one! The way we care for our hair will affect how our hair behaves.

Swimming in chlorine-treated pools may leave hair feeling brittle and dry, and the more time outdoors in direct UV Rays can weaken your hair and fade your colour.

This year's humidity has been on another level! Which is partly why it has felt so much hotter, and can completely alter the way your curls, waves, and even straighter hair textures respond. Frizz Alert!

You may also have been washing more frequently, styling differently, or relying on products you would not normally use while travelling.

Individually, these changes can feel small.

Everything affects your hair more than you may think, and each season has its own challenges.

Why Does Your Hair Feel Drier After Summer?

One of the most common things I hear around this time of year is:

"My hair just feels dry."

But dry can mean many different things.

For one person, the hair may genuinely need more conditioning and protection.

For another, there may be a build-up of products or minerals making the hair feel rough or less responsive.

For someone else, their usual styling routine might simply no longer suit the environment they have been in.

This is why reaching immediately for the richest mask or adding several new products is not always the answer.

Before adding more, it helps to understand what has changed.

Why Has Your Colour Faded?

Colour naturally evolves between appointments, but summer can make those changes feel more noticeable.

More time outdoors, swimming, frequent washing, and changes to your normal routine can all affect how fresh a colour appears.

Blondes may feel warmer.

Brunettes can lose some of their richness.

Vivids may soften more quickly than expected.

Even natural grey or silver hair can begin to feel different in tone.

It does not necessarily mean something has gone wrong. It may simply be time to reassess what your hair needs now, rather than what it needed at the beginning of summer.

Why Is Your Hair Suddenly Frizzier?

Humidity is particularly good at reminding us that our hair has a mind of its own.

Hair that usually feels predictable may suddenly expand, curl differently, lose definition, or refuse to sit in the style you are used to.

For naturally wavy, curly, and textured hair, this can be especially noticeable.

Rather than trying to force the hair back into its usual behaviour, sometimes the easier option is to work with the change.

Your summer routine may need to look slightly different from your winter one.

And that is completely normal.

Sometimes Your Hair Needs a Reset, Not a Rescue

This is where I think we often get caught out.

Something changes, so naturally we want to fix it.

We think that we need: More moisture. More protein. More oils. More treatments. More everything.

But sometimes your hair does not need rescuing. It simply needs a reset.

That might mean clarifying build-up, adjusting how often you cleanse, changing the balance of your styling products, refreshing your colour, or simply giving the ends a little attention.

The answer depends entirely on the hair in front of you.

Because, just like we explored in the first issue of the Lacuna Ro Journal, no two heads of hair behave in exactly the same way. Book an INNOluxe Treatment to you appointment to reset your hair.

Listen Before You Add More

Before changing your entire routine, take a moment to notice what your hair is actually doing.

Does it feel dry, or coated?

Has your curl pattern changed, or are your styling products simply behaving differently?

Has your colour dramatically changed, or has the tone gradually softened?

Is your hair damaged, or does it just need a little more care after a busy summer?

Understanding those differences makes it much easier to decide what comes next.

And sometimes, the best thing you can do for your hair is not immediately add more.

It is simply to pay attention.

A Softer Reset for the Season Ahead

As summer begins to slow down, our routines usually start to shift again.

And our hair follows.

This is a lovely time to reassess what feels good, what is still working, and what might need adjusting before the next season begins.

Not because summer has ruined your hair.

But because your hair has lived through it with you.

And perhaps, rather than trying to return it to exactly how it was before, we can simply understand what it needs now.

If your hair has been feeling a little different lately, you are always welcome to bring those questions into the chair.
