Unlike traditional skin patch testing, ColourStart uses a small sample of saliva to assess your risk level, helping make the colour consultation process more convenient while maintaining a strong focus on client safety.
What is ColourStart?
​ColourStart is a simple at-home patch test designed to help identify whether you may be allergic to para-phenylenediamine (PPD), an ingredient commonly found in many professional and home hair colour products.
ColourStart works by exposing the skin to a very small, controlled amount of PPD, helping to identify individuals who may be at risk of an allergic reaction before a colour service takes place.

While no allergy test can guarantee that a reaction will never occur, ColourStart helps salons and clients make more informed decisions before proceeding with a colour service.
Why do I need ColourStart?
Hair colour allergies can develop at any time, even if you have coloured your hair for many years without experiencing a problem.

Many colour manufacturers recommend allergy screening before using hair colour products. ColourStart provides a convenient way to screen for potential allergy to PPD before your appointment.
How Does ColourStart Work?

Obtain a ColourStart patch from your salon.

Complete the ColourStart Passport questionnaire to confirm whether the test is suitable for you.

Apply the patch to your arm following the instructions provided.

Leave the patch in place for at least 48 hours.

Remove the patch and assess the skin underneath.

Continue monitoring the area for a further 48 to 72 hours.

Share your result through your ColourStart Passport before your colour appointment.
What Is ColourStart Passport?
ColourStart Passport is an online system that helps determine whether ColourStart is suitable for you to use.
It also allows you to record and share your ColourStart results with participating hair professionals. The Passport includes a series of questions relating to your hair colour history and any previous reactions to hair colour.
What Is ColourStart PaDoes ColourStart Replace A Traditional Patch Test?
If the colour product recommends allergy testing before use, ColourStart can be used instead of a manufacturer's Allergy Alert Test (AAT) for screening allergy to PPD. Neither test should be carried out together.
Important Informartion
ColourStart is designed to screen for allergy to PPD only and cannot identify allergy to every ingredient found in hair colour products.
No allergy test can guarantee a completely risk-free colour service. If a reaction occurs, hair colour should not be applied, and medical advice should be sought where appropriate.
